Partner Yoga – Halasana

Partner Yoga can be fun and it’s also a useful way of helping you attain a position you might find difficult to achieve on your own. One person acts as a prop and support. Here in Halasana, the two heads are touching end to end and each person holds onto the other persons upper arms. By resisting against the arms, rolling- up is made easier as well as rolling down and helps to prevent the head and neck flicking up. You feel supported by your partner.

Here’s a quote from one of my regular Yoga Students
‘I have been attending Tanya’s yoga session on a Tuesday morning at the harmony centre for almost 2 years now. I love it! I have a very busy life and cherish the quiet time, the chanting, the meditation and different breathing techniques. The hour and half of gentle yoga is interesting and never repetitive. I appreciate the small class size which allows Tanya to give us all individual attention. It is my hours sanctuary a week! thank you, Love Sally.’

Massage and Beauty Treatments

‘I would like to recommend Tanya Bradbury to anyone who needs and would like to experience massage and the
Dr Hauschka Beauty Treatments. All that Tanya has done for me has helped me with good health and well-being.

I had my first sessions with Tanya after I contracted shingles on my face and head 4 years ago. There is something unique about the Dr Haushka facial that promotes natural healing. The scars on my face have gone and her massage has helped the tension in my neck and shoulder muscles, so that I can now continue driving. Those are the facts, but I just love the treatments.

Time with Tanya is so well spent, I come away feeling the best that I can be, physically and mentally.’
I hope this is not too over the top but this is exactly how I feel.

I am a longtime advocate of Dr Hauschka treatments and by chance, I discovered Tanya 12 years ago in Southwold and have happily followed her to her new location in Laxfield.
Tanya and her treatments are fabulous for the soul and well-being and she offers an oasis of calm.
It is amazing what a Dr Hauschka treatment can achieve. I have suffered very badly with rosacea in the past but the Dr Hauschka treatment and products keep that at bay and my skin looks amazingly clear. I would recommend everyone to Tanya, and especially if they have sensitive skin.

In Light of The Self: Adi Shankara and the Yoga of Non-Dualism by Alistair Shearer

In the Light of the Self: Adi Shankara and the Yoga
of Non-dualism by Alistair Shearer

Hot of the press Alistair’s latest book draws us into the life of one of India’s greatest spiritual teachers.

Adi Shankara was a South Indian sage and the foremost teacher of Advaita Vedanta, the perennial philosophy that lies at the heart of all religions. Such is his stature that even Ramana Maharshi, probably the best-known modern exponent of Advaita, referred to him simply as Acharya – ‘The Teacher’ – and translated some of his works from Sanskrit for his own devotees.

Advaita offers a vision of life as the manifestation of an absolute, non-dual consciousness transcending all time, space and causation, and it provides the direct means to experience this divine ground of all being as our own Self.

Far from being some dry and dusty ‘Indian philosophy’, Advaita is a system of practical psychology, based on meditation and insight, that draws the practitioner into the deepest consideration of their own status and what it means to be a human being. As such, it is of immediate relevance to us today, torn as we are by questions of identity and purpose, and the struggle to resolve the age-old problems of ignorance, suffering and inequality.

This book presents the teachings of Adi Shankara in a highly approachable form through modern translations of his original writings, set in the lively context of his life and mission.

The author, Alistair Shearer, is well-known for his translations of Sanskrit classics: Selections from the Upanishads and The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. He is a long-time teacher of meditation in the lineage of Shankara.

Praise for Alistair Shearer’s writings.

The Traveller’s Key to Northern India:

This is quite simply the most informed and the most literate guide to the great Indian keynotes. It is the vade mecum for the intelligent student of the subcontinent ~ Geoffrey Moorhouse

Superb. A well-written, vivid and informative guide ~ Travel & Leisure

By far the best guidebook on India I have ever seen ~ Huston Smith

The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali:

A wonderful translation, full of contemporary insight yet luminous with eternal truth ~ Jacob Needleman

Ojas the Essence of the Dhatus by Tanya Bradbury

Definition of Ojas

Ojah somaatmakam snigdham shuklam shitam sthiram saram:

Viviktam mrdu mrtsnam ca pranayatanamuttaman.

Dehasyavavstena vyapto bhavati dehnam;

Tadabhavacca siryante sharirani sharirinam.

Ref: SS. Su 15: 25-26

I love the name Ojas it has a lovely ring to it don’t you think? Ojas is such an amazing substance which modern medicine doesn’t recognise or understand. I want to talk about it because it is something which everyone should know about. It is the body’s built in immune system, protecting and preventing it from disease, a form of biological consciousness, which can expands and grow within the individual. You can increase Ojas in your daily life, by simply changing the lifestyle and diet. Ojas is described as the finest relative substance of digestion, or the purest expression of correct digestion and metabolism. It is the purest essence of the transformation of the dhatus.

Sushruta says that ojas is responsible for biological strength, vitality and immunity against disease. The ojas itself is the main determinant of bala and vyaadhiksamatva, or resistance against disease.

Properties of Ojas

Guru, heavy.
Sandram is like the consistency of honey.
Bahlam that which spreads into the minute channels.
Picchilam, sticky.
Snigdham, oily similar in consistency to ghee.
Madhuram sweet like honey.
The smell of puffed rice or Laju.
Sveta, white, the colour of fresh butter.
Shitam, cool
Vishada, clear,
Mridu soft.
Saram, flowing.
Bala, strength and vitality to the body and mind.
A well – formed musculature, proper functioning of all the motor activities.
A Clear voice.
Bright and lustrous complexion.
Proper functioning of all the sensory, motor and psychic functions.

Two types of Ojas

There are two types of ojas found in the body, Apara Ojas is found circulating in the blood stream and is present within the organs and tissues of the body.( Ardhaanjali pramaana.) It is the result of the digestive process and the transformation of the dhatus.

Para ojas is found in the heart and consists of eight drops, or asta bindu. These eight drops are present at birth and stay within the heart. If the heart is damaged or injured the ojas will be lost, this is the reason why patients who suffer from severe injury to the heart die.

During the forth month of pregnancy the fetus receives the eight drops of para ojas from the mother. And again in the eighth month the ojas moves between mother and baby. This is why the eighth month is a dangerous time for delivery, both for the unborn child and the mother. We can say that para ojas is a concentrated form of ojas, which has a powerful effect on the vitality of all the body cells, tissues and organs. This is also known as Jivaniya Shakti The practice of meditation enhances and spreads the ojas inside and outside the body; enhancing happiness, immunity, love and compassion in the individual. The five bodily sheaths, or Pancha Kosha’s which surround the body are strengthened. These five layers relate to the different functioning aspects of the individual.

The Annamaya Kosha -physical body- solid matter related to Pancha Mahabhutas bodily wants and needs.
The Pranamaya Kosha -pranic body- balanced flow of prana or vital energy through the nadis inti every cell in the body.
The Manomaya Kosha – mind body- thoughts, emotions, desires, manifestation of stress or Aadhi. Over time this stress can seep into the Pranamaya Kosha and manifest as pshycosomatic disorders.
The Vijnanamaya Kosha -intellect body- discrimination, wisdom and knowledge.
The Ananadamaya Kosha- the most subtle which is the bliss body. A person established in internal bliss or Inner alert silence.
These layers make up the Aura of an individual, and are a powerful and natural form of protection. In satvik and enlightened people this aura is very strong, sensitive people are able to visualize and read them. Even after meditation Ojas can be seen as a healthy glow on the skin, and the eyes appear clearer and brighter.
We can say that Ojas is the Biological or physical manifestation in the body, and Soma is the comic manifestation of Ojas or “Cosmic Glue” which binds and holds together the entire universe. For even the universe depends on Soma to maintain it’s health, equilibrium and balance. In this way we can see how the actions of individual beings and nations (ie, wars, killing and destruction of our natural habitat) can have a indirect effect not only on our own evolution but on that of the entire world and universe.

Such a beautiful and perfect thing this creation is…

How to increase Ojas in the body

Sadhana practising Yoga, pranayama and meditation daily.
Chanting Mantra’s.
Satvik lifestyle following dinacharya and rytucharya
Satvik diet, to increase ojas, i.e. freshly cooked organic vegetarian food, not overly spiced.

Foods, which are naturally sweet, Milk, ghee, fresh butter, wheat, small amounts of cream.
Fresh nuts, honey, dates.
Whole grains and rice.
Fresh sweet fruits and vegetables. Most of these foods are brimhana, i.e. they build and increase the dhatu’s.
Practising Brahmacharyia
Ayurvedic herbs and Rasayanas, these all enhance shukra dhatu and ojas and increase immunity and rejuvenation. Chayvan prash.
I.e. Shatarvari, Bala, Shilajit, Kumari, Yashti madhu.
Medhya Rasayanas- Ashwaghanda, Shankapushpi, Brahmi,
Kronch wheat (type of seed) and Vacha.

Things which decrease ojas in the body

Constant worry, anxiety.
Shock and trauma
Accidents, i.e. Broken bones, puncture wounds, injury to marma points.
Late nights and Insomnia.
Shift work
Excessive travel
Lack of proper rest
Excessive sex
Eating unwholesome foods, incompatible foods.
Processed and junk foods.
Smoking tobacco and Cannabis
Alcohol and any other recreational drugs.
Allopathic medicine.
Negative mental emotions, eg. Anger, jealousy, envy.
Excessive pride.
Unforgiving nature.
Conditional love

Let Indra drink, O Soma, of thy juice for wisdom, and all Deities for strength.

So flow thou on as bright celestial juice, flow to the vast, immortal dwelling-place.

Flow onward, Soma, as a mighty sea, as Father of the Gods to every form.

Ayurvedic Consultation and Treatment

I’ve long been intrigued by the Indian traditions and therapies of Yoga and Ayurveda.

I have tried a variety of Ayurvedic head massages including the ultimate Shirodhara where warm medicated oil is poured gently over your forehead. These have all been very calming and therapeutic and have led me to find out more about the Ayurvedic approach and its focus on preventative medicine and health.

I discovered Tanya Bradbury who offers Ayurvedic consultations along with a range of treatments and so I booked a consultation with her.

Together we filled in a detailed questionnaire analysing the physical and emotional aspects of my health and, then after also examining my pulse, Tanya came to the conclusion that I was a Pitta/Vata (according to Ayurveda we are all made up of a combination of three Doshas or ‘types’ – Pitta, Vata or Kapha with one being dominant, and these energies influence our bodily functions).

She then went on to explain what this meant for me. How I could create a healthy internal environment and prevent disease by following a few basic principles and eating foods most suited to my dosha or ‘type’ and avoiding or reducing foods that are considered harmful. The idea being that this would promote heath by rectifying any imbalances.

I’ve since incorporated some of the practices into my personal routine and general wellness programme such as simple light breakfasts with warm cooked fruit and cereal and consuming my main meal and proteins at lunch when digestive power (Agni) is strongest (good digestion of food, pollutants and experiences is a key to good health according to Ayurveda). Warm oil sesame massage is also beneficial for my qualities along with warm milk before bedtime with spices such as cinnamon or nutmeg and honey.

Tanya currently works at the Harmony Centre at Walpole near Halesworth where she also runs yoga sessions. Booking an Ayurvedic treatment and consultation with Tanya on your journey to good health and wellness will leave you feeling vibrant, balanced and healthy as well as armed with tips, diet and lifestyle routines to maintain health and prevent disease.

Dr Hauschka Conference at WALA Germany.

In May I was invited to Wala Heilmitell in Germany. Wala are the manufacturers of Anthroposophical medicines and Dr Hauschka cosmetics. The company was founded in the 1940's by Dr Rudolph Hauschka, Hauschka studied and developed medicines born out of the study of rhythm being the carrier of life. A group of estheticians from the UK and Europe met together for a conference to update us on the work that WALA does. This included bio-dynamic growing and cultivation ( an organic system which takes into account the phases of the moon to gain optimum growing potential and vitality along with only using orgsnic materials in the composting and cultivation process) spending time in the herb garden familiarising ourselves with the plant ingredients which go to make up these wonderful products. We also learnt more about their world -wide distribution and international work setting- up and helping communities develop fair trade businesses from the growing and cultivation of plants and herbs used in the products.I'm looking forward to return for a training course in the near future.

Newsletter February 2016

Dear Friends,

I do hope you are all well and have had a good start to the year. As February is already upon us, I just wanted to let you know what’s happening at Priya Spa.
I'm still at The Swan, practising all my treatments and teaching my regular Yoga classes at The Harmony Centre in Walpole.
In January I taught a few private Yoga classes at the hotel which were well received, so if any of you are interested in a class, please let me know in advance so I can arrange something for you and your friends. Many of you working in Southwold have requested a Yoga class after work, so Tuesday evening at 5.45pm- 7pm is a possibility. Do let me know if you’re interested.

As Valentine’s day is approaching I’m including a free relaxing rhythmical back massage with the Dr Hauschka Classic & Skin Rescue Facials, this offer is available throughout February. This year is my 30th Anniversary as a Dr Hauschka esthetician! and I still love the products and the marvellous treatments.
Many of you enjoy regular treatments with me, but not all of you are aware that you can buy all your facial and massage treatments as a course, paying in advance gives you a large saving on each treatment.
For example, the Dr Hauschka two hour Classic facial is normally £95.00, if you purchase 3 x 2 hour treatments at a cost of £250 you will save £35.00 making each treatment worth £83.00. All courses are valid for six months and offers can change through out the year so please ask when you next book in.

In October last year I embarked on a two year, part- time training course in Bio-dynamic Craniosacral therapy. Bio-dynamic Craniosacral therapy has grown out of Osteopathy it is a very gentle non- invasive technique, which has many healing applications. It can help newborn babies with birth traumas and everyday conditions that we all experience; back pain, headaches, digestive problems, fatigue, menstrual and hormonal conditions etc. It connects to your bodies own inner healing intelligence and increases health and vitality. Naturally this approach appeals to me as It compliments my own way of working.
Over the years I've experienced the effectiveness of this technique, my own Chiropractor incorporates Craniosacral therapy into his work and he encouraged me to do the training.
I will be out of the clinic every other month for about 5 days and so in case you call and I’m not there, here are my dates when I’m away in London.

2016 Training dates:

Feb 18th-21st
April 14th- 17th
June 8th- 12th
Sept 7th-11th
Nov 10th- 13th

Warmest wishes and hope to hear from you soon,Tanya.

What is Health

Health is the outward expression of vitality arising from the bio- intelligence contained within all living cells and at the heart of this vitality is rhythm.
As human beings participating within this universe, we are constantly influenced by the rhythms of nature, yet often are unaware of its subtle force. The Circadian rhythms found in most living things respond primarily to light and darkness and work on a 24 hour cycle.
Sleep, one of our most important bio-rhythms is essential for health and is necessary to rest and restore the mind and body.
Seasonal changes which unfold throughout the year affect our mood and lifestyle and the monthly phases of the moon which move the ocean tides, manifest physical changes within a women’s body.
We can say that these rhythms are the ordering principles of creation, creating form from the formless, nourishing and upholding all life on earth and the wider cosmos.
In essence man is the microcosm, a reflection of the universe or macrocosm, and everything contained within it.
These rhythmic motions are a property unique to all living cells, tissues and fluids emanating from nature and directly influencing our whole physiology
Underlying all these rhythms is The Unified Field or Ground State, written about in ancient Vedic texts and now recognised by modern quantum physics as a silent, yet dynamic level of reality.
From this unmanifest level of life, Brahman, all manifest life evolves, expressing itself through a dynamic self- referral process of consciousness.
Within even the smallest cell that expression of consciousness can be seen as a greater part of the whole mind – body continuum. This innate intelligence is within every living cell of our body and it reflects our health and well-being. It is only when we move away from this natural healthy state through lack of discrimination that the disease starts to manifest.
In Vedanta this is know as Pragya Aparadh, (the mistake of the intellect)
If we reconnect to this source of being then healing can take place at the deepest level. The technique of bio-dynamic craniosacral therapy reconnects the whole physiology to this deeper level of life. Through practice, the practitioner becomes aware of fundamental rhythms or tides within the body the body, which transport the Breathe of life within the fluids and tissues. By coming to rest at the still-point; a pause in the movement of the tide, the mind – body physiology is reconnected to this silent yet dynamic field thus allowing potential for increased healing and potency.
So our health is always there just bubbling under the surface, we just need to find the way to access it.

‘Health is related to a return to the freedom of interchange between body physiology and stillness.’ Rolin Becker.

Yata Pinde Tat Brahmande
You are the universe within the universe.
The world outside of you is inside you.
As is the cosmic body so is the personal body
As is the cosmic mind so is the personal mind.
Rig Veda.

In silence the teachings are heard.
In stillness the world is transformed.
